Pensacola, Florida (June 27, 2026) — The first night of a doubleheader weekend on the Gulf Coast got off to a wild and eventful start for the Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Modifieds of Mayhem Tour powered by Chevrolet Performance on Friday night.
Pensacola, Fl. native Derrick Griffin (no 95) went back-to-back with his victory on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway, with the win coming just over a month after his victory in the Beach Ball 50, also at his home track. Griffin led the points coming into the weekend, and that momentum boost was visible all day long as he topped the charts in both practice sessions as well as in qualifying.
Modifieds of Mayhem Top 5 Qualifiers
- #95 Derrick Griffin – 17.424 seconds
- #18 Kevin Peel – 17.620 seconds
- #13 Kyle Purvis – 17.623 seconds
- #45 Bubba VanDevender – 17.643 seconds
- #60 Jeff Letson – 17.651 seconds
While Griffin won the CT525 Fast Qualifier Award, he had to start from third by virtue of the redraw. It didn’t take long for Griffin to propel to the front, though. Chaos erupted behind him when an incident occured between Kevin Peel (no. 18) and Kyle Purvis (no. 13), with Purvis catching a bit of air after some wheel-to-wheel contact. Despite the halt in the action and another incident later on involving the no. 60 of Jeff Letson, Griffin held on to score what ended up being a dominant victory.
“I can’t thank everybody that helps us do this enough,” said Griffin in victory lane. “Coastal Engine and Machine, Classic Homes, Buggy Worx, Deep South Cranes, everybody that helps us on this deal. Rawhide and Fisher, especially my wife, she does everything. It’s just nice to put one together. I like the direction we’re going. We made some pretty significant changes after the last race. We weren’t quite happy with it, so we’re moving in the right direction.”
Behind Griffin, Jared Maupin (no. 96) came home in the runner-up position. Maupin, who came into the weekend tied for second in points with the no. 18 of Kevin Peel, benefitted as a result of the incident on Lap 15 between Peel and Purvis.
“Just a little free on entry,” said Maupin post-race. “Had a pretty good hot rod. I hate to see that wreck, but it kind of benefitted us, especially for the points. We’ll keep tweaking on this thing and try again.”
The no. 18 machine usually driven by Matthew LaPrade finished in third, but with Snowball Derby champion Augie Grill vehind the wheel.
“I just want to thank Logan for letting me drive this thing,” said Grill. “Matthew had a deal going on he had to go to. It gave me an opportunity to come here and race tonight. I thought we had a better car than that honestly. Third place isn’t bad, but I feel like we had a car that could race with the top two.”
Behind Grill, Donnie Hamrac (no. 8) finished in fourth place, with Buddy Anderson (no. 62) rounding out the top five.
The second and final episode of the Gulf Coast Doubleheader will take place Saturday night, June 27th, at the nearby Mobile International Speedway.
